The Song of Moses and the Lamb

Scripture
The song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb: “Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the ages. Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.” (Revelation 15.3-4)
Today’s Reading

Revelation 14-15

Devotional Thought

In Revelation 15, we are introduced to “the seven last plagues – last, because with them God’s wrath is completed” (v. 1). These plagues, along with the other plagues described in Revelation, indicate that this world will come to a cataclysmic end in preparation for the eternal city of God. Along with the end of this world as we know it, history, too, will come to a close and all those who have rejected God will be subject to judgment. But there is a song of hope in chapter 15! It is “the song of Moses… and the Lamb”! You and I are able to sing that song.

Moses and the Lamb… an interesting conflation. Why are those “who had been victorious over the beast” singing the song of Moses and the Lamb? Moses and the Lamb are the embodiment of the two great covenants of God. Moses, through the Law, brought us the Old Covenant, which is recorded in the Old Testament of the Bible. The Lamb, Jesus, brings us the New Covenant, which is shared in the New Testament of the Bible. The purpose of Moses (the Law) was to “lead us to Christ” (Galatians 3.24). Then, at the end, the Lamb will “bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ” (Ephesians 1.10). Moses and the Lamb both lead to the same place!

Sing the song of Moses and the Lamb! Rejoice in God’s great deeds through the Old and New Covenants! He is just and true and holy! Come worship before him and bring glory to his name!

Prayer

Eternal God, who in wisdom and with authority gave us the Old and New Covenants, I sing to you the song of Moses and the Lamb. Great and marvelous are your deeds, O Lord Almighty! Amen.
