Jesus Is the Door

Last night I dreamed I was walking down a hallway. I came upon double doors. In my dream, I knew that I needed to get through those doors. There were two problems, however. The doors were closed, and someone came up behind me and grabbed me around the neck, stopping me from going through the doors. I struggled to break free, but I was powerless in the grip of the attacker. I woke myself and my wife Lana shouting, "Help!" I later told Lana that I felt relieved to be out of that dream when I woke up. (I'm not so sure she was relieved that I woke her up!)

As I read Jesus' message to the church in Philadelphia (Revelation 3), I thought of those closed doors and that unknown adversary from my dream. The closed doors had made me vulnerable to attack. The door before the church in Philadelphia, however, was open. Jesus had opened it! Nothing prevented them from walking through. The church was under attack by "those of the synagogue of Satan," but Jesus provided a way of escape. Even though they had "but little power," they were able to pass through the door to safety.

Under attack from our adversary, we too find a way of escape! Jesus said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." (John 10.7-10)
