For Your Sake
Scripture
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began. (Titus 1.1-2)
Today’s Reading
Devotional Thought
The Apostle Paul wrote not for himself or his original readers only, but for the sake of God's elect - those who have believed in Jesus. In particular, he wrote for the sake of the elect's…
- Faith: As we read God’s Word, we must always remember it is a guide to faith. Its stories and lessons were not written to entertain us nor to provide us with a complete history or an exhaustive science. It is all about us having a relationship with the God who is revealed as Creator, Caller, Deliverer, Leader, Redeemer, and Sovereign.
- Knowledge: Faith is neither blind nor uninformed. Paul wrote to Titus for the sake of his church’s knowledge of the truth. In today’s media-saturated world, what is untrue is made “true” by sheer repetition. But God’s Truth is not based on repetition, political correctness, cultural expediency, or human desire. We must go to the Bible to know what is true and what is false.
- Godliness: Having faith and knowledge is not enough. James wrote that “even the devils believe and tremble.” We can have genuine faith that something is true, yet still refuse to follow it. In order to benefit from our faith and knowledge, we must take it into our lives. We must act upon what we believe and know.
- Hope: We know that God never lies, so when he says that we have eternal life in Jesus, we have hope. Not the wishful-thinking hope as the world knows. We have hope that is grounded on the character of God himself. He has made us promises, and he will keep them.
The Bible was written for your sake, for your faith, knowledge, godliness, and hope.
Prayer
Thank you, Lord, for your Word. As I read it, help my faith to increase, my knowledge to grow, my character to shine, and my hope to be established. Amen.
