Daily Reading: John 1
Scripture Focus: Who are you? ... What do you say about yourself? (John 1.22)
Devotional Thought: Many years ago, when I worked for Cooper Tire Company, I made a business trip to Texarkana, AR to visit one of our plants there. Flying from Findlay, OH to Texarkana, AR was not a real easy thing to accomplish. Connections were impossible and it could take an entire day to make the flight. Since I was such an important executive (Not!), I was able to ride the company jet! I was only about 24 or 25, but thought I was a big shot! There were a couple other passengers on board, and I remember asking one of them, "Who are you?" He was a wonderfully polite man and told me his name. Then he said something that gave me pause, "I'm president of the company..." Ah... I wasn't such a big shot after all!
John the Baptist wasn't such a big shot after all either. There were those who wanted to know, "Who are you? What do you say about yourself?" John replied simply and humbly that he was not important, but that he had been given an important job - to prepare the way for Jesus!
Who are you? What do you say about yourself? None of us are big shots when you come down to it. But, we all have an important job to do: let people know about Jesus! What do our words, our actions, our attitudes, our faithfulness say about us? What kind of Jesus are we pointing others to?
Who are you? What do you say about yourself? What do you say about Jesus?
Prayer: Father in heaven, thank you for loving us when we were nobodies - apart from you and your kingdom. Help us to live such lives that when people see us they will see Jesus. Amen.
Psalm of the Day: 1 Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright. 2 Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings! 3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. 4 For the word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. 5 He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD. 6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. 7 He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses. (Psalms 33:1-7)
