The Well Is Deep

Daily Reading: John 4

Scripture Focus: Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. (John 4.6)

Devotional Thought: I am fascinated by the wireless charging stations made for smart phones. "How do they get electricity from one to the other without wires?" I've found out that it is by 'electromagnetic induction.' When the two devices are properly positioned an electromagnetic field in the charger induces the same in the phone, transferring the energy. Wow! Almost seems miraculous, doesn't it?

Jesus found out that the principle doesn't work for satisfying thirst. One day as he was going about his ministry, he found himself sitting next to a well in Samaria. But, the Bible says he had "nothing to draw with and the well is deep." No matter how long he sat there, he would not receive the life-refreshing water from the depths of the well. Proper positioning was not the answer. He had to ask for help. The Samaritan woman helped him draw the water out and he satisfied his thirst.

Actually, the same is true for us when it comes to drawing the life-giving water from the well of salvation. While 'proper positioning' is helpful - we can hold our Bibles in our laps all morning, or we can sit in church all day long, or we can even be lifelong members of the church - it's like sitting beside the well. Those things won't satisfy our spiritual thirst. We need ask God to give us a drink. And then, we need to drink deeply of the water of life.

How about you? Are you thirsty for more of God? Are you wearied from the journey? Come to the well. Humble yourself. Ask God to satisfy you, to restore your strength, to renew your hope. The well is deep and the supply is endless.

Prayer: Lord, just as you grew weary on your journey, I sometimes get tired, too. Help me to sit down with you at the well of salvation and to drink deeply of your truth. Refresh me, O Lord. Amen.

Psalm of the Day: 1 I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. 3 Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together! 4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. 5 Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. 6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. 7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. (Psalms 34:1-7)
