Surpassing Wisdom

Daily Reading: 1 Kings 4

Scripture Focus: And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore, so that Solomon's wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt. (1 Kings 4.29-30)

Devotional Thought: How did Solomon get so rich? Was he just a “lucky guy”? Did he follow some get rich quick plan? The answer to this is that Solomon was wise. He knew how to deal with people. He knew how to make sound financial decisions. “God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore” (1 Kings 4:29).

The reason God gave Solomon wisdom, is because he asked for it. Earlier in the life of Solomon, we know that Solomon was given a choice. God offered him whatever he needed to be the best king he could be. He could have asked for riches, he could have asked for peace from war, but instead he asked God for wisdom to rule the people he had been given (2 Chronicles1:11-12).

God values wisdom. He wants us to make wise choices. He wants us to ask for wisdom as well. We need God’s wisdom if we are to navigate the waters of this life. If you are facing a decision today, ask God for wisdom, he promises to give it to you. This is one subject that the Bible is very clear about. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5). So, the next time you are in a quandary about what to do, go to the Lord in prayer, read your Bible, talk to a trusted friend or pastor, but most of all trust that God will give you the wisdom you need for all the problems and decisions you face.

Prayer: Lord, I do not ask that my wisdom surpass the wisdom of all the people of the east, but I do ask that you would give me all the wisdom I need to follow and serve you. And, in the process, may I bring you glory! Amen

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 119.25-32

25 My soul clings to the dust;

give me life according to your word!

26 When I told of my ways, you answered me;

teach me your statutes!

27 Make me understand the way of your precepts,

and I will meditate on your wondrous works.

28 My soul melts away for sorrow;

strengthen me according to your word!

29 Put false ways far from me

and graciously teach me your law!

30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness;

I set your rules before me.

31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord;

let me not be put to shame!

32 I will run in the way of your commandments

when you enlarge my heart!
