Daily Reading: Hebrews 1

Scripture Focus: Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. (Hebrews 1.1-2)

Devotional Thought: The book of Hebrews begins by celebrating the fact that in the past God would speak to us through prophets.  Have you ever sent a message to someone through a third party?  It is common, isn’t it?  “Tell your wife I said hi…”  “Give my love to Dad…”  I know that when I’m going to the hospital or to a funeral visitation, it is not unusual for people to ask me to give their greetings to another: “Tell her, I’m praying for her…”  Sometimes, I get so many of those it is hard to remember all of them!

Getting messages through a third party is appreciated.  But, what is even better?  Delivering or receiving the message personally!  And, that is just what God did in Jesus Christ!  God came in the person of Jesus to tell us just how much he loves us.  And today, Jesus comes into our hearts with the unbelievable message from God: “I want to be with you always!”

I love when my kids and grandkids come to visit.  It is great to get up in the morning and have them in the house.  I can get my message to them directly: "I love you!"  And, I get the same message from them directly!  When we accept Jesus into our hearts, we have that same privilege with the Son of God, who made the universe and who will ultimately inherit all the riches of creation.

Listen to the voice of God today.  You will hear him in the message of Jesus Christ!

Prayer: Jesus, I thank you that you have come to speak to us, to reveal the Father to us, and to invite us into an eternal conversation.  Speak, Lord, for I am listening.  Amen.

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 46.1-7

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.

5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.

6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
