Hallelujah!

Daily Reading: Revelation 19

Scripture Focus: Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory! (Revelation 19.6b-7a)

Devotional Thought: Do you remember singing the children's chorus "Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelujah! Praise ye the Lord!"? We still love to do that one in church don't we? Those of us who are a little older may not jump up like we used to, but our spirits leap within us when we sing those words! Do you know what hallelujah means? From Hebrew, Hallel means praise and jah is the suffix for Yahweh, or Jehovah. So Hallelujah means simply, "Praise the Lord!"

In Revelation 19, we see a picture of heavenly worshipers jumping up like kids and singing: "Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelu, Hallelujah!" Like the children's chorus, there are four "Hallelujahs" in this chapter. Let's praise the Lord for...

  • His salvation and glory and power and judgments (vv. 1-2). God is worthy of praise just because he is God! His attributes are unspeakable!

  • Our vindication seen in the judgment of sin (v. 3). How can we ever praise God enough for Jesus, the Savior? We have been set free from sin's dominion!

  • Making us his servants, whether we are small or great in the eyes of man (v. 5). We do not need the praise of man who perishes, but that of God which lasts for eternity! I want to please him!

  • The marriage of the Lamb which is to come when we will reign with him in righteousness forever and ever! (vv. 6-8). Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

One day we will be transported from the veil of tears and we shall join the hosts of heaven singing his praises forever and ever. Hallelujah!

Prayer: O Lord, I want to be in that number when the saints go marching home, when they lift their voices in eternal praise to you. Hallelujah!

Psalm of the Day: 15 As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; 16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. 17 But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children's children, 18 to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments. 19 The LORD has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. 20 Bless the LORD, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word! 21 Bless the LORD, all his hosts, his ministers, who do his will! 22 Bless the LORD, all his works, in all places of his dominion. Bless the LORD, O my soul! (Psalms 103:15-22)
