Daily Reading: Proverbs 6
Scripture Focus: If you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth, then do this my son, and save yourself, for you have come into the hand of your neighbor; go, hasten, and plead urgently with your neighbor. Give your eyes no sleep and your eyelids no slumber; save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the hand of the fowler. (Proverbs 6.2-5)
Devotional Thought: When it comes to debt, "Get out, and stay out!"
Solomon warned his son against going into debt, over-committing with “the words of your mouth.” He pressed hard in this matter, telling him to take no rest until he resolved the matter. To me that is sound advice: Keep your debt as low as possible and get out of debt as fast as you can!
Spending tomorrow’s money today is always a risky proposition. Here are some things that wisdom demands:
Do not keep a balance on your credit card! Use your credit card only to the amount that you can pay off monthly. Yes, you will have to wait for certain things, but having an older style washing machine that is paid off sure feels better than having a credit card balance that demands interest payments every month.
When you have to incur debt (only for your business or your house should be your goal), then pay it off as quickly as possible. It may be uncomfortable waiting an extra 3 years driving your old car around, but you will save thousands by not having interest payments. And never buy a car based on the payments! If you have to calculate the payments to see if you can afford it, then you can’t afford it! Buy something cheaper. I know there are times when waiting on a car is not feasible, but when it is, wait!
If you buy something on 90 days same as cash, pay it off within the 90 days! If you can’t afford to do that, then don’t buy it.
So, get out and stay out!
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for paying the debt that I owed for sin. Now, help me to heed the admonishment of the Bible to "let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another." Amen.
Psalm of the Day: Psalm 5.1-6
1 Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my groaning.
2 Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray.
3 O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.
4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you.
5 The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers.
6 You destroy those who speak lies; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
