Ages and Stages

Daily Reading: Colossians 3

Scripture Focus: Seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (Colossians 3.1b-2)

Devotional Thought: “What am I to do with my life? Am I to amass wealth? Am I to become powerful and popular?” The question of what we are to pursue is relevant at any age. And, depending on your life stage, it will change; depending on your circumstances, it will change.

The Apostle Paul learned that. There were times when he was free to move about and preach the gospel. In those stages of his life, he served as a church-planting missionary – going all over the Roman Empire preaching the gospel. There were other times when he was imprisoned for his faith. In those times, he gave himself to writing letters and encouraging his congregations and friends from a jail cell. A disciple of Paul, Epaphras, learned that. While he was in jail with Paul, he was “always struggling on your behalf in his prayers.” There are seasons when all we can do is pray. There are other times, when we are sick as Epaphroditus in Philippians 2, that all we can do is get better.

With all the ages and stages of our lives we must have an overarching purpose to get us through the changes. Paul told us what that purpose is to be: “Seek the things that are above, where Christ is…” No matter where we are or what our circumstances, we are able to transform them – by transporting them – to where Christ is! Jesus said it like this, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

What are you seeking today? If it is Christ, then no matter your age or your stage, you will live with purpose and meaning.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to seek the things that are above, to value the things that are eternal. I know that “the present form of this world is passing away” so help me to live with an eye to heaven! Amen.

Psalm of the Day: 7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. 10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. 11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16.7-11)
